Ft 101e and the installation of the AADE display.
This requires some physical modification to the
radio itself.

this article is new: 11th March 2013.  
I dont have a photographic memory. So..when I disassemble a radio like Im doing
here; I put the knobs in a pattern that resembles how they came off of the radio
and I use scotch tape to tape things like springs, set screws and felt pieces ect
in the order they came off. I take lots of pictures as well ..in case I need them.
FT101E is now being prepared to accept the Almost All Digital Electronics Digital readout
dial. The old analog dial (the circular plate) has to go to make room for the digital readout
I was working from a hard copy of the FT101 service manual. When removing the front panel.. I struggled a bit until I realized that there were 2 more screws (on the
plastic dial bezel) that had to be removed before the front panel would come off. I read the instructions with the AADE display and those set of instructions did
document this necessary step! Above right: the Plastic Dial bezel. I will be removing some of the protruding plastic frame around the dial window to allow for the new
digital display. I will use a battery operated Dremel tool and cutting discs.
I had to trim both sides of the
chasis opening. I used a nibbling
tool. The first nibbling tool I used
would not cut ..but rather it bent
the metal. You can see that in the
picture left.
I had to cut about 1/8th of an inch
from the right side and about
3/16ths or so from the left side.

When cutting/nibbling..I tried to
keep track of each little piece I
nibbled off. I did not allow slivers
of metal to get into the FT101E.
Might cause all kinds of problems!

As extra insurance..I doubled up
some packing tape into loops that
had sticky side out and I stuffed
them into place so that if any
slivers or pieces of metal got
loose..then they would be caught
by this type of "fly-paper" !
Above ..the new aperature (larger to accomodate the digital readout. You
can see the digital readout (blue colored) as it is being tested with a 5 volt
dc supply. I used a 100 ohm resistance then 200 ohms and I might later try
some higher resistances to try and get the best comprimise between
visibility of the background blue light and power consumption. A minimalist
approach will be used. The lowest power to produce a good looking display
that reads well.
The circuit board containing the ICs and other electronics is shown above.
There are some components on the bottom of the circuit board and I will
be accomodating them by positioning the circuit board to mount as shown
to the left picture. The circuit board will overhang the metal enclosure in
the FT101E and will be held in place by double sided foam adhesive with
proper insurance that non of the components gets shorted out.

Power will be taken from the FT101E and I will figure that out a little later.

There are 3 miniature RG174 coax cables to be attached to the FT101E at
various signal points. There will be a ribbon type cable to run to the front
panel mounted frequency readout display.
The old dial window with cursor will not be used. The AADE digital
display (digital readout) with Blue backlight ..will go in its place.

fit the digital readout display. LIkewise,
the front panel chasis aperture has to be
I will have to tap into a DC
voltage (likely 5 volts) in
the FT101E. Here I
experiment with 100 ohm
resistors to try and find
the right limiting resistor.
200 ohms seems to work
pretty good with 5 volts. I
may try using a 1 kilohm
trimmer pot in series with
200 ohm resistor in order
to have an adjustable
display brightness.
In the next pictures..I read the AADE instructions on where to hook the 3 small
coax lines to the radio. VFO, BFO and HFO. If I havent already..I will be posting
the FT101 service manual in pdf format (link) on my MANUALS page.

Also I did a a bit of planning on where and how to mount the blue digital display
This green wire with the female connector on each end will be used to hook up the display board to the main logic circuit board. I have a bunch of these wires with various connections on
them. I ordered quite a few for prototyping work. I think they are called Ardinio wires and Ardinio breadboards. This is the 20 cm length ..which will be ok for what Im doing.
